Participants from all over the country will unite to take steps to raise awareness of obesity in America. Participants will be challenged to track their steps on October 31, 2017, then report their total by the following day, November 1st. The final total will be calculated and announced at ObesityWeek 2017 in Washington DC.

Every penny raised will be converted into ONE STEP towards the challenge goal of 50 million steps. In addition to taking steps your fundraising efforts can help you and/or your team increase your step count.
How to Get Started:
Start by registering for free to take the challenge. Please note you will be required to create an account or log into an existing account.
2. Join or Create a Team
During registration you will have the option to participate as an individual, join, or create your own team. We encourage you to join or create a team to help raise awareness.
3. Spread the Word
Invite your friends to join the challenge and share with them why you believe it is important to raise awareness of obesity. Use the hashtag #UWS2017 on twitter to let others know you are taking a step to fight obesity.
Once you have registered you will have access to your own personal fundraising page. Share this page with your friends via social media and ask them to consider making a donation to support you or your team. Don't forget every penny you raise will count as ONE step towards your final step count. And the team that takes the most steps will take home the golden trophy!
5. Motive & Challenge Yourself
Encourage yourself and your teammates to take extra steps on Oct. 31st. We have listed some helpful tips that could help you easily increase your normal step count.
6. Track and Submit
Start tracking your steps the morning of Tuesday, October 31st. All steps must be submitted by the following day, November 1st, at 11:45pm EST.
7. Have Fun!
There are so many different ways to increase your step count throughout the day. Use the hashtag #UWS2017 to let us know your favorite way to be active during the week.
What is the United We Step Challenge?
The ASMBS Foundation’s United We Step Challenge is a one day virtual step challenge and fundraiser for obesity research and education. The goal is to raise awareness of obesity in American by taking a collective total of 50 million steps.
Why take steps to raise awareness?
Physical activity is an important key to losing an maintaining a healthy weight. According to the CDC 1 in 3 American adults are affected by obesity, and only 20% of adults get the recommended amount of daily physical activity. Through this event we hope to encourage individuals to increase their daily physical activity to build and maintain a healthy life style.
When does the challenge start?
The challenge starts on Tuesday, October 31, 2017.
Where is the challenge location?
The United We Step Challenge is a virtual event - you can participate from anywhere.
How does the challenge work?
Participants will monitor their daily step count on Tuesday, October 31, 2017. Participants will then have until the following day to submit their total step count for October 31st.
How do I track my steps?
You will need a pedometer, body monitoring device, or smart phone with a built-in pedometer to track your steps. Download our free step tracking sheet to help you keep track of your steps.
How do I submit my steps?
At the end of the day, visit your Donor Drive dashboard and complete the “Submit Your Steps” form. A reminder email with a link to the form will also be sent to you.. Steps must be submitted by November 1st at 11:45pm EST to be counted. Steps should only be submitted once, duplicate submissions will not be counted.

How many steps should I take?
How many steps you take each day depends on your fitness level. The average number of steps taken is around 5,000 or 2 miles per day. Please consult your doctor if you have any concern about participating in this event.
Can I join after the start date?
Yes, registration opens on August 1, 2017 and closes at 11:45pm on October 31, 2017.
How much is registration?
There is no fee to participate in this challenge.
Do I have to fundraise?
No, fundraising is not required, and you will not be penalized for not meeting the minimum fundraising goal of $25. However, we encourage you to fundraise as proceeds from this event will help support the mission of the ASMBS Foundation. Also, he team that takes the most steps will be awarded with the golden trophy.
What are the prizes?
We will award the team that takes the most steps with a golden trophy. We will also recognize the individual that takes the most steps, and the team and individuals that raise the most funds.
Where does the money collected go?
Proceeds collected from this event will support the mission of the ASMBS Foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to funding advanced obesity and bariatric surgery research as well as professional education programs. I forgot to join a team when I registered, can I still join one?
Yes! You can join a team by logging into your Donor Drive dashboard and selecting “Change Team Membership” under Event Information.
