About the ASMBS Foundation

A Message from Our President

Dear Friends,

Due to concerns of COVID-19 risks and out of an abundance of caution, the Walk from Obesity is going virtual this fall. We have chosen September 26th for our National Walk from Obesity (WFO) Day! ⁣We may walk separately this year, but we'll be very much together for the cause of obesity!

The disease of obesity increases the risk for life-threatening conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, cancers, and more, causing a decrease in an individual's life expectancy by 7-14 years. Now, studies suggest obesity is a major factor for serious COVID-19 illness in patients, causing increased complications and mortality rates. The importance of good health and the need to combat the disease of obesity has never been greater than today!  ⁣

The ASMBS Foundation has made a commitment to provide funding for an ASMBS research grant(s) to better understand the correlations between these two diseases. You can help by making a donation or registering to walk and fundraise for this event.  All participant funds raised through this virtual Walk will directly support our research and access to care grant programs, with grant proposals involving COVID-19 research taking precedence.

I encourage you to start a Walk team when you register and ask friends, family, patients, or colleagues to join your fundraising efforts.  A large trophy and recognition will be given to the top fundraising team! Once you register, be sure to fundraise every day leading up to Walk day. Then on September 26th, we will come together as ONE community to "Walk from Obesity" in a virtual Walk - you choose where and when you walk that day.

I want to thank you in advance for your fundraising efforts and for supporting our cause.  The work we do is dependent on the support we get from patients, healthcare professionals, and community members like you, who want to make a difference for those affected by the disease of obesity. ⁣

Healthy Regards,

Paul Enochs, MD
ASMBS Foundation President

Registration, Fundraising, and Teams

Online Registration

Online registration is FREE and will be available until Saturday,  September 26, 2020 at 11:59 PM EST. Please click "Register Now!" and follow the prompts to register online. Since this is a virtual event, registration is only available online. You will have the option to register as an individual, start a team, or join a team. You will also be asked to set a fundraising goal. Fundraising is not required, but is strongly encouraged.

Starting a Team
If you start a team when registering, you will be considered the team captain. Within 48 hours after registering and creating your team, we will email you graphics to help you recruit team members and/or donors for your team. When creating a team, please choose which category your team falls under most. Team categories will be:

Healthcare (hospital, practice, etc.)
Corporate (for profit business)
ASMBS State Chapter
(friends, family, group, etc.)
Nonprofit (school, church, 501c3, etc.)

Individual Fundraising
All participants will automatically receive an online participant/fundraising page. You may use this page to fundraise and/or share your story of #WhyIWalk. Please utilize our online fundraising tools to help meet your goal and/or to invite family and friends to join you in the virtual Walk. You may also sync your participant fundraising page with Facebook, creating a Facebook Fundraiser. Please take advantage of this great tool, as it's the easiest way to ask your friends and family to support your efforts!

We encourage all of our participants to be fundraisers and help us meet our event fundraising goal. All participants (individuals and team members) can win prizes and receive achievement badges on their online participant page. If you are part of a team, your fundraising efforts will automatically count towards your team's fundraising goal as well.

Fundraising Prizes - All prizes will be awarded after the fundraising deadline of 10/3.  However, if you fundraise $100 by 9/14, you will receive your shirt, bag, and bracelet before Walk day! Also, the Top Individual Fundraiser will receive a prize package that includes a year supply of vitamins (from Bariatric Fusion),  a $250 gift card for fitness equipment, and more! See below for all the details.

Check out our Resource Center for fundraising tips, social media graphics, and more!
Prize eligibility is based on individual efforts only. "Team Donations" will not count towards any individuals efforts.

Team Fundraising
After the Walk, we will announce the top fundraising team from each category. The top fundraising team across ALL categories will be deemed the National WFO Day Fundraising Champions and the Golden Cup Trophy will be awarded to the team captain on behalf of the team! The champion team will also be featured on the Walk from Obesity website's homepage for one year!

*Each team's fundraising is independent of each other. Multiple team's may NOT combine their fundraising dollars to qualify for the category recognition or for the Gold Cup Trophy. In order for any individual's fundraising dollars to count towards a team's goal, the individual must be a registered member of that team.
